About
The Smart Waves program brings together multidisciplinary expertise to push the boundaries of intelligent wave research. It explores diverse fields such as optics, acoustics, microwaves, and seismology, with key applications in health, communication, and sustainable development. Since the 2000s, major innovations (such as metamaterials, wavefront shaping, and dense emitter-receiver arrays) have transformed how waves are controlled and used.
Smart Waves structures these advances around four strategic pillars: understanding wave propagation in complex media, mastering the generation of arbitrary wavefronts, developing quantitative imaging techniques, and designing new materials to make waves more agile.
By fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and driving innovation, Smart Waves aims to position PSL and its partner institutions as leaders in intelligent wave science.
Smart Waves brings together expertise from multiple disciplines to better understand, control, and harness waves — acoustic, optical, electromagnetic, or seismic — in complex environments.
The main areas of research
Waves and Information
Understanding, quantifying, and harnessing the information carried by waves, especially in complex media and across large-scale source–receiver networks.
Advanced Imaging and Sensing
Developing quantitative imaging techniques to probe both biological systems and inanimate materials with high precision.
Materials and Devices for Agile Waves
Designing innovative materials and systems that enable precise wave control and open the way to new applications in communication, healthcare, and the environment.
